Spring is ideal for a wardrobe update – it is the season of new beginnings after all. From 3D florals to alternative animal prints, fashion month delivered a fresh crop of trends that we can't wait to hop on in the coming weeks.

Another key trend that has caught our eye this season comes not from the runway, but from the wardrobes of some serious stylish royals.

The tie-neck dress has been having something of a moment of late, worn by the likes of Princess Beatrice, Spain's Queen Letizia and Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria to name but a few of its converts.

The style lends itself to the lifestyle of a working royal perfectly – demure, polished and versatile, the tie can be styled undone for a slightly more relaxed feel or tied to add volume and invoke the look of a classic pussy bow.

Just a few days ago, Princess Beatrice stepped out in an elegant ensemble featuring the style at Louis Vuitton's babywear collection launch event in London, hosted by Sabine Getty. The 34-year-old wore a tie-neck dress by the French designer label in a luxe-feel chain print, strongly reminiscent of those featured on scarves in the 1980s. The princess' dress has an asymmetric hem, long sleeves and a matching belt to cinch in her waist. She topped off her look with black boots and a chic khaki top handle bag, also courtesy of Louis Vuitton.

Queen Letizia is another royal who has been flying the flag for the tie-neck dress. Last week the Spanish royal attended the delivery of the FMRE (Forum of Renowned Spanish Brands) Accreditations in a vibrant red midi dress by Poète with a high neckline and a waist-length tie which she wore undone. Her dress had a more formal air than that of Princess Beatrice, and her outfit felt refined with the addition of suede courts in a similarly bright shade.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has also championed the style, although tied hers in the more traditional pussy bow look, back in late February for a visit to Australia's National Arboretum. The earthy green shade of her geometric print dress felt fitting for the occasion (a tree planting ceremony), and she allowed the drama of her necktie to take centre stage by wearing her hair scraped back in a sleek bun.
