In a move apparently intended to improve relations with her fellow footballer wives, Victoria Beckham has changed her mind about staying in a private villa during the European Championships.

When she tried instead to book into the luxurious Penha Longa resort just outside Lisbon, however, the England captain's wife was told it is fully booked.

While the British Football Association booked 23 rooms at the upmarket complex months ago, Victoria had opted for the greater privacy offered by a private villa. Concerned that her decision might be seen as a snub by the other players' partners, the former Spice Girl then had a last minute change of heart.

But her attempt to secure a suite for herself and the Beckhams’ two sons Brooklyn and Romeo was thwarted when it emerged that the remaining rooms had already been given to the Czech squad. “We had a call from Mrs Beckham’s people, pleading for a room,” confirmed a hotel source, “but there’s simply not one to spare... We have been fully booked for some weeks now.”

The 30-year-old singer and her children were due to fly out to Portugal on Friday, accompanied by Victoria’s parents.
