Nicole Kidman has admitted she was surprised with the positive reaction to her new drama, Big Little Lies. Appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, the 49-year-old praised her co-star Reese Witherspoon, who also produced the HBO series alongside her. "It was an amazing thing to get that show filmed," she explained. "Reese Witherspoon and I produced this and managed to get the show made. It was a huge success. That's when women who choose to combine their power, they can get things done."

The Hollywood actress, who plays retired lawyer Celeste Wright in the gritty show, went on to reveal she was surprised that more and more people were recognising her on the streets. She said: "When it first came out, I remembered going, 'Oh I thought it would be a little bit more successful, maybe it's not going to hit the place we really wanted it.' And then it just started to snowball."

She added: "The great thing was, that it was on HBO, and everyone had to wait each week to see the next episode. Then suddenly I was being recognised at airports, on airplanes and women were coming up to me on the streets. They were all talking about the character and what was going to happen next. I was even getting texts from Keith's friends." Big Little Lies also stars Shailene Woodley and Alexander Skarsgård as well as Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz. The story follows three mothers who have children in the same class at school but who conflict with the other mums. The tension between the parents slowly grows until a murder is committed.

When asked about getting hurt during the filming of the domestic violence scenes with Alexander, who plays her abusive husband, Nicole made it clear that she was not physically harmed in the process. "I threw myself into it, to the point where I would come home at night with, you know, bruises and really sore," she explained. "Alexander would not mean to do this, and I would never tell him that he was hurting me. I wanted him to commit to the scene."
