Celebrity birthdays: Moby turns 49

Share this:

Happy birthday Moby! As the American singer-songwiter turns 49, HELLO! Online takes a look at what the stars have in store for Moby and you...This is what Moby, who is a Virgo, can be expecting today: Whenever Tarzan swung from a vine, there must have been a tentative moment. Was it going to take his weight? What if it broke half way across the swamp delivering him straight into the hungry jaws of a waiting alligator - or crocodile - or whatever it was? There probably never came a point where he felt entirely safe.

His trademark, wild, chest-beating yodel, probably meant (in Tarzanese), 'I hope this thing doesn't break.' People who act courageously often don't actually feel brave. But today, you must make your jump. Click here to read your horoscope

Richard Melville Hall known by his stage name Moby, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, DJ and photographer. According to Moby, his middle name and the nickname Moby was given to him by his parents because of an ancestral relationship to Moby Dick author Herman Melville.

He is well known for his electronic music, vegan lifestyle, and support of animal rights. Moby has sold over 20million albums worldwide.

AllMusic considers him "one of the most important dance music figures of the early '90s, helping bring the music to a mainstream audience both in the UK and in America". He has won 15 world renowned awards including an MTV Europe Music award and an IFPI Platinum Europe Award. In Moby's 2014 biography, he wrote, "I guess I just accept that the music business has fallen apart.

When I make a record, it's simply because I love making records – I don't expect commercial success, there's no reason to second guess whether something's going to sell well, or if a radio programmer is going to like it – so I can just make the record I want to make." Moby is also a keen charity worker. At the age of 19, he admitted that he began suffering from panic attacks.

He claims that he no longer experiences them as frequently as he used to and that he is very open about this in an attempt to help fans who suffer from similar panic disorders. He works with non-profit organisations such as the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF), which is dedicated to advancing scientific inquiry on music and the brain and to developing clinical treatments to benefit people of all ages. He also started a website called MobyGratis.com, which is designed for independent and non-profit filmmakers or film students to apply for free licences to use Moby music in their film.

All revenue from any films that become a commercial success is passed on to the Humane Society. Although never married, Moby has had several relationships, briefly dating actress Natalie Portman back in 2001 and more recently actress Kelly Tisdale, whom he founded and co-owned a small restaurant and tea shop called Teany with. They unfortunately split after a short time together. Moby is allegedly rumored to be single.
